For decades since it first appeared, clutch pencils that possess two to four millimeter leads have proven to be the best for daily use by graphic designers, artists and architects alike. These, however, will require a sharpening device that will not affect the metal hood of the pencil.

Invented and patented in 1941 by Swiss designer Georges Dessonnaz, this solid plastic contraption is designed with a wide base and simple sphere. Gentle on the most brittle of leads, it also ensures an even, elegantly tapered tip.
